A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

When I think about all the modern vampire movies I’ve seen, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, is one I recommend the most. This 2014 American horror Western film, is set in modern day Iran and filmed in black and white. The vampire is a young woman who stalks the streets of a ghost town, preying on the wicked.

Does the perfect movie exist? Because to me A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is perfect. I loved everything about it, from the vampire character (who I will discuss in detail later) is simply referred to as The Girl, the techno-punk mixed soundtrack is awesome, and the stylish way the movie uses shadows is fantastic!

The Girl stalking her victim.

The film itself is an homage to the spaghetti western genre (another genre I love). The vampire is a vigilant loner who punishes wrongdoers. But since this film is set in Iran the vampire wears a chador instead of a cape and also rides skateboard though the desolate village. The irony that it’s a woman who is the night stalker is not lost. Men in this film underestimate The Girl, and it’s very satisfying to see them get their comeuppance.

I really wish more modern horror movies embraced the black and white aesthetic. It works so well in AGWHAN (abbreviated). Lighting is even more important when there’s no other colors to distract the viewer. Shadows can be scary, they make your own imagination work against you. When The Girl prowls the night, it’s her silhouette and shadow that scares people first. And they haven’t even seen her fangs!

The fangs in question.

Let’s talk about our vampire, The Girl. She’s a woman of few words. But she isn’t a monster. There are hints of humanity in her character that is refreshing to see in a vampire film. Yet, she isn’t an angel either. There is even a romantic sub plot that plays along the film between The Girl and Arash, a young man she meets in the village. I like that her past and backstory is a mystery, she is simply The Girl. And she is a girl that bites.

So there you have it. The perfect movie to me must have 1. Vampires (duh) 2. Be stylishly filmed 3. Have a strong female presence 4. Have a killer soundtrack 5. Asshole men should suffer. Ok that last one was a bit dark apologies…. it’s not essential to a prefect film, it just helps.

I want to be vague enough so not to spoil the movie, because I think every movie lover should see AGWHAN. Be they horror fanatic, film buff or fellow vampire lover. This movie deserves a viewing.

Thanks for reading!
